What is a DEF CON Group POC, and how do you become one?
POC means point of contact. A DEF CON Group POC is a recognized contact for a specific local group, helping its members, prospective attendees, and the department communicate with the people organizing it.
What does a POC do?
A POC helps maintain accurate group information, answers or routes attendance questions, and communicates organizer changes or problems requiring department support. Local duties may also include planning meetings, finding speakers, and coordinating volunteers.
The role concerns the named local group. It does not make someone a DEF CON employee, Goon, DCGCC, ambassador, or spokesperson for DEF CON. It does not authorize an official DEF CON event.
Becoming a POC for a new group
Follow the new-group process. Identify the proposed organizers and their contact information, explain the meeting plan, and complete the department's review. An application or a self-written profile does not establish recognized POC status.
Joining an existing group's organizing team
Talk with the current organizers about how you can help. If you will become a POC, coordinate the proposed change with them and the department, and submit the updated information through the registration workflow.
Keep volunteering and formal record changes distinct: helping at a meeting is useful, but it does not automatically change who is recorded as a POC.
Taking over from an unreachable organizer
Do not assume that access to an account or an inactive-looking website makes the role available. Supply contact attempts and relevant history and ask the department to review the situation. Follow the reactivation process when appropriate.
Verification and privacy
Provide accurate contact information and demonstrate your connection to the group and its activity. Do not send government identification as part of a routine POC request; the department's published verification guidance does not require it.
