DEF CONGROUPS

Privacy

How information is handled when you use the DEF CON Groups website.

Updated October 17, 2026

Browsing and searching

You do not need an account to use this website. The site does not include advertising trackers or analytics scripts, and its application code does not set cookies or save your answers in browser storage. Search terms and directory filters can appear in the page URL, browser history and server request logs. Avoid entering private information into search fields.

Hosting and security

Our hosting and security services may process technical request information such as your IP address, browser information, requested URLs and timestamps to deliver the website, troubleshoot problems and prevent abuse. Those services may also use security cookies. Retention depends on the service and its configuration; this page does not promise a specific deletion period.

Public group listings

The directory contains information approved for public listing. Group profiles and the directory JSON file are publicly accessible and can be downloaded or copied. Do not submit private phone numbers, home addresses or other information you do not want published in public listing fields.

Preparing an email

The contact page uses a few basic answers to prepare an email in your browser. Those answers are not submitted to this website or saved in its application storage. Opening your email app or copying the draft transfers the information to that app or your clipboard. You decide whether to send it. Add your detailed explanation and supporting evidence in your email app. Once sent, your message is handled by the receiving department and the email services involved.

Group information form

Starting, rebooting and updating a group uses a separate, externally hosted form. Following that link leaves this website. Information submitted there is handled through that form and the department’s review process, rather than stored by this website. Clearly identify which details you agree to publish.

Maps and newsletters

Opening the map requests map images from OpenStreetMap. The homepage requests the public newsletter feed from Buttondown. These requests share technical information, including your IP address, with the respective service. The map does not request your device’s location. Newsletter subscriptions go directly to Buttondown, which manages subscription information and unsubscribe requests; this website does not store subscriber email addresses.

Questions and corrections

To ask about information shown here or request a correction or removal, contact the DEF CON Groups department. Copies held by other people or services may remain after a listing changes.

For DEF CON’s broader privacy practices, see the DEF CON privacy policy. This page describes the Groups website’s own features and services. External sites and services have their own privacy policies.
