Group identity, promotion, and representation

A local group needs room to organize its community. Public communication also needs to make clear whether someone is speaking for that group, the DEF CON Groups department, or DEF CON.

Describe your role accurately

Use the approved group identity and identify the local group when announcing meetings or speaking with partners. Being a local POC does not by itself authorize commitments on behalf of the department or DEF CON.

Do not describe an application, proposed partnership, event participation, or leadership transfer as approved until the responsible team confirms it. If a third party asks for an official endorsement or department commitment, refer the request to the department.

Partners can help people find the official route

Community partners can share the website and refer people interested in joining or starting a group. Group approval, reactivation, and leadership review belong with the department.

Before promoting a group-development initiative as being on behalf of DEF CON, coordinate with the department. Do not independently announce that DEF CON has authorized a new group, assigned an organizer, or launched a regional expansion effort.

Ask before committing to uses that need permission

For logo artwork, merchandise, sponsorship arrangements, or a proposed use that implies official endorsement, describe the use and ask which requirements apply before committing funds or making promises. This page does not grant a trademark license or establish a merchandise or sponsorship policy.

Conference participation is a separate arrangement

Local group registration should not be treated as confirmation of conference badges, travel support, funding, or a scheduled activity. Use the instructions for the particular opportunity and wait for confirmation from the responsible team. Avoid promising members benefits that have not been confirmed.
