DEF CON Groups Community Coordinators: the role and how to get involved

A DEF CON Groups Community Coordinator, or DCGCC, helps operate the DCG Community at DEF CON. This is a hands-on volunteer assignment supporting the people and activities in the Community space.

What does a DCGCC do?

Assignments can include welcoming attendees, helping people find local groups, explaining Community activities, supporting games and contests, and assisting with setup and teardown. Follow the responsibilities and escalation instructions provided for your assignment.

DCGCCs help people connect with the program. The role does not independently authorize group approvals, leadership transfers, policy decisions, or commitments on behalf of DEF CON. Bring those questions to the department team.

Is a DCGCC the same as a local POC or Goon?

No. A POC serves a local group. A DCGCC works an assigned role in the DCG Community. A Goon serves as DEF CON volunteer staff. Someone may hold more than one role, but participation in one does not automatically confer another.

DCGCC is not an ambassador title, regional franchise, or authority to appoint local organizers.

How do I become a DCGCC?

Watch the department's current announcements for the call for Community Coordinators. Apply using the instructions for that event and be clear about your availability, relevant experience, local group involvement, and interest in the work.

You can contact the department to ask where the current call is published. Do not use an old event's application as evidence that recruitment is open now. Applying does not confirm selection or an assignment.

Active POCs are encouraged to watch for opportunities to contribute. The current call controls eligibility and selection; prior participation does not guarantee a returning position.

Understand the commitment before accepting

Confirm the required dates, shifts, duties, training or check-in instructions, and any badge arrangement in your selection communication. Any admission benefit applies to the confirmed assignment and its conditions. Do not assume travel, lodging, or other expenses are covered.

If your availability changes, tell the team promptly so coverage can be arranged.
