What is a DEF CON Goon?

DEF CON Goons are DEF CON's volunteer staff. They help run the conference and its departments, with responsibilities that vary by assignment. The role is a working responsibility, not a title someone can award themselves.

Goons do different jobs

DEF CON needs people supporting operations, attendees, technical services, programming, and other functions. Within DEF CON Groups, Goons help deliver department work and the DCG Community at DEF CON.

A Goon's assignment matters. Do not assume every Goon handles security, approves group applications, or can make commitments for another department. Ask for the appropriate contact when a question falls outside someone's responsibilities.

Does organizing a group make me a Goon?

No. A POC serves a local group. A DCGCC supports assigned Community work. Neither role automatically makes someone a Goon. A person can hold multiple roles, but each appointment or selection is separate.

Do not describe local meetup volunteers as DEF CON Goons unless they actually hold that role. Clothing, old badges, participation, or proximity to staff does not establish a current assignment.

How do I become a Goon?

Recruitment depends on the department and its needs. Contribute reliably, develop useful skills, and follow the relevant department's current process when opportunities are available. There is no automatic promotion from attendee, POC, or DCGCC to Goon, and this page does not promise an opening or selection.

If you want to contribute specifically to the DEF CON Groups Community, read about the DCGCC role and contact the department for current opportunities.
